Disa culture

disa

Light:  Bright filtered light with no direct sun.  1500-200 footcandles.
Temperature: Disas prefer cool temperatures with daytime temperatures ranging from 70-80 degrees.  They will tolerate brief periods of higher temperatures if the roots are kept cool and wet.  Disas will tolerate night temperatures into the 30s, but should be protected from freezing.
Water: Disas need to be WET.  Water quality is very important as Disas will not tolerate excess salts and minerals that occur naturally in many water sources.  Tap water can be mixed with bottled water to reduce the salt and chlorine levels.  Plants can sit in a saucer of water, but change the water regularly to insure fresh conditions.  Use a 20-20-20 fertilizer at one-tenth the recommended dosage every two weeks during the spring and summer.  Less or no fertilizer is recommended in the winter.
Repotting:  Disas should be repotted every year in the fall after the blooming season.  New Zealand sphagnum moss is the preferred medium, and should be packed loosely in the pot.
